If you have your own measurements, ring me and I can give you an estimate over the phone, or I can come to your home and give you a free quotation.

Order Waiting Times

Because all gates are made individually to your requirements, and I am a sole trader it does mean a waiting time during peak periods. During April to October it can be anything up to 8 weeks and at other times approximately 3 to 5 weeks.

All enquiries are dealt with by myself, and as I may not be able to deal with your query immediately I will return any calls as soon as possible.

Construction Information

Thank you for considering AJS Timber Gates. Timber gates enhance the property and add to the security. The main driveway gates are constructed from sustainable Swedish Redwood grown in the North of Sweden. The frame thickness is 70mm (2 inches) finished size which makes the gates very strong and gives them a sturdy, secure appearance (except legged and braced - details on request). The tongue and groove boards are 20mm ( inch) thick and come vacuum pressure treated. Joints on the framed gates are mortice and tennon construction and are glued with Cascomite glue.

You can visit the gate workshop to see products being made at any time, however please ring first to make sure I am not out on site fitting.

General Information.

Timber is a green and natural product and will be prone to splitting, expansion, shrinkage and warping. I cannot guarantee against this happening. To reduce, NOT PREVENT this natural occurrence especially on kiln dried softwoods and tanlised timber it is essential that the product is fully sealed using an approved sealant including the bottom edges and all end grain.

Recommended stains.

  1. Saddolin Extra Woodstain

  2. Sikkens Woodstain

  3. Cuprinol Woodstain

  4. Johnstones Woodstain

  5. Dulux Weathershield Woodstain

Products come with a light base stain but then require 3 further coats of woodstain. Timber gate posts are tanalised for underground protection and will split when dry weather persists. This does not effect the strength and to me, looks authentic. Steel posts are an alternative option.

All black coated steel hardware will be prone to rust if it gets chipped. Galvanized is an alternative to this. If hardware is damaged in winds etc., I cannot accept responsibility for broken or damaged parts. Past experience shows that many gates settle within the first couple of months after installation. If this happens I will adjust them free of charge at the earliest opportunity.

All gates move in different ways at different times of the year due to weather conditions. They will require adjustments during their life span. If called out in this instance I would have to charge.

Other Questions

  1. What timber is used ?    Scandinavian and Russian Redwood.

  2. What is the lifespan of timber ?    5 to 15 years depending upon how well it is maintained.

  3. Is timber as good as it used to be 20 years ago ?   No, it is faster grown these days which makes the grain less tight and prone to splitting.

  4. What treatment is required ?   We apply a base stain preserver, which then requires a sealant. We recommend either Saddolin or Sikkens.

  5. Can they be painted ?   Yes, but we recommend that you stain.

  6. Can they be tanalized ?  Yes, but we do not recommend tanalized drive gates as it splits and warps.

  7. Will the gates require adjustments over the years ? Yes, as weather conditions alter the gates will move in different ways.

  8. Do you charge for adjustments ?  Yes we do charge for adjusting. If they settle in the first couple of months we will adjust free of charge (We will adjust within 2 weeks if possible).

  9. Do you make gates to measure ?  Yes, so it may mean we have a waiting list of 4 to 8 weeks.

  10. What hardware is recommended ?  Black looks good but needs regular maintenance. Galvanised should not rust.

We recommend the following stains on installation:- 1 coat of Saddolin Classic followed by 2 coats of Saddolin Extra and then maintained annually.
